Elephant and Castle Cleaner is committed to providing professional cleaning services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks, promoting safe working practices and ensuring that our services are delivered responsibly at all times.
This policy applies to all cleaning activities carried out by Elephant and Castle Cleaner, including work at client premises, residential properties, commercial sites and communal areas. Our aim is to prevent accidents, work-related ill health, damage to property and any adverse impact on the environment.
We will take all reasonably practicable steps to:
Identify and control hazards associated with cleaning tasks and environments, provide safe equipment and suitable cleaning products, offer clear information, instruction and training, and promote a positive health and safety culture throughout the company.
Senior management holds overall responsibility for the implementation, review and continual improvement of this Health and Safety Policy. Management will:
Ensure risk assessments are completed, kept up to date and communicated to relevant staff, provide and maintain safe systems of work, equipment and materials, allocate appropriate resources for health and safety, and monitor performance to ensure standards are met and improved where necessary.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for the day-to-day management of health and safety on cleaning contracts. They will check that procedures are followed, necessary protective equipment is available and used correctly, and any concerns are addressed promptly.
All employees, including temporary and part-time cleaners, share responsibility for working safely and cooperating with health and safety requirements. Employees must:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others affected by their work, follow the training, instructions and safe systems of work provided, use protective clothing and equipment correctly, report hazards, incidents, accidents, near misses or unsafe conditions as soon as possible, and avoid any behaviour that could put themselves or others at risk.
Risk assessments are carried out for typical cleaning tasks and for specific client premises where necessary. These assessments consider hazards such as slips and trips, manual handling, use of chemicals, work at height on low steps or access equipment, electrical equipment use and lone working.
Safe working practices are developed from these assessments and may include agreed methods for cleaning floors, toilets, kitchens, offices, common areas and external entrances, procedures for handling waste and sharps if present, and limits on tasks that staff are authorised to carry out.
Risk assessments and procedures are reviewed regularly and whenever there is a significant change in working methods, equipment or locations.
Cleaning products are selected and used with safety as a priority. Data sheets are obtained from suppliers and are used to inform safe handling and storage arrangements. We aim to minimise exposure to hazardous substances and to substitute less hazardous products where feasible.
Employees are trained in the correct dilution, application, storage and disposal of cleaning chemicals. Chemicals must be kept in their original containers with labels intact and must never be mixed unless the instructions explicitly permit it. Containers are stored securely, away from heat sources and food, and out of reach of unauthorised persons.
All cleaning equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, floor machines, mops and tools, is selected for suitability and safety. Equipment is inspected regularly and maintained in good working order. Any defect or damage must be reported immediately and the item taken out of use until it has been repaired or replaced.
Electrical equipment is visually checked before use and used only in accordance with instructions. Cables must be routed to minimise trip hazards and must not be pulled to remove plugs from sockets.
Where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means, appropriate personal protective equipment is provided. Depending on the task, this may include gloves, eye protection, masks or aprons. Staff must wear the equipment as instructed and look after it carefully. Any loss or damage must be reported so that replacements can be arranged.
Cleaning often involves lifting, carrying and moving equipment or materials. Elephant and Castle Cleaner is committed to reducing manual handling risks by using trolleys, lighter equipment and sensible work methods wherever possible.
Employees receive guidance on safe lifting techniques, avoiding overreaching and using correct posture. Heavy or awkward loads should not be moved alone, and staff are encouraged to request assistance or alternative solutions where necessary.
Good housekeeping is essential to prevent slips and trips. Wet floors must be clearly signposted using warning signs until fully dry. Spills are cleared promptly, and walkways are kept free of trailing cables, equipment and waste.
Mats and floor coverings must be properly positioned and checked for damage or curling edges. Any defects in flooring or lighting that increase the risk of slipping or tripping must be reported to the appropriate person on site.
Some cleaning activities may be carried out by individuals working alone or outside normal business hours. We assess the risks associated with lone working and take reasonable steps to ensure communication, emergency arrangements and secure access are in place.
While working at client premises, our employees must follow both Elephant and Castle Cleaner procedures and any site-specific rules or health and safety requirements that have been communicated to them.
All staff receive induction training covering core health and safety topics, emergency procedures and the specific risks associated with cleaning tasks. Additional instruction is provided on the safe use of equipment, chemicals, personal protective equipment and client-specific procedures.
Training is refreshed periodically and when new tasks, methods or products are introduced. Supervisors monitor work to ensure that training is applied in practice and provide guidance and correction as required.
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported without delay, whether or not an injury has occurred. This enables us to investigate causes, learn from events and prevent recurrence. Records are retained and reviewed to identify patterns or areas where further control measures may be needed.
Employees are briefed on emergency arrangements relevant to their place of work, including fire procedures, evacuation routes and assembly points, and how to contact the appropriate emergency services.
Elephant and Castle Cleaner monitors compliance with this Health and Safety Policy through supervision, inspections and review of accident and incident data. Where issues are identified, corrective actions are agreed and implemented.
This policy is reviewed regularly and updated where necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry good practice, our services or the nature of risks encountered in our day-to-day cleaning operations.
This Health and Safety Policy is communicated to all employees and is available to clients and other interested parties on request. Observing this policy is a condition of employment, and everyone working for Elephant and Castle Cleaner is expected to play an active role in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment.
